The development of olive cultivation in Kythera dates back to the 19th century and is linked to the administration of the island by the English from 1809 to 1864, which obliged every inhabitant of the island to work -among other things- for planting olives.

Today, the island of Kythera has about 50 000 olive trees and 400 producers. The oil is produced only from coroneic olives, 90% of which are not irrigated. Thanks to the westerly wind, the olive trees are not affected by diseases such as dengue, and are cultivated without the addition of pesticides, fungicides or fertilisers. Even though the producers don’t have the organic label for the most part, their oil is still organic.
